Ships Today: Real-Time Fulfillment Messaging

The Problem

AllPoints customers making urgent purchases need to know immediately whether a part can arrive today. Without clear, trustworthy messaging, customers hesitate on time-sensitive orders. The existing inventory display didn’t communicate fulfillment speed or cutoff times, leaving customers uncertain about delivery windows.

The Challenge

Building accurate “Ships Today” messaging required handling dozens of variables: warehouse inventory, safety stock, e-holds, cutoff times, drop-ship vs. warehouse fulfillment, weekends/holidays, backorders, freight eligibility, and vendor lead times. Every condition needed consistent, customer-friendly language across PDP, cart, and checkout.

Designed a dynamic messaging system with clear decision logic for every inventory scenario:

Core messaging states:

  • Ships Today (with countdown)
  • Ships Next Business Day

 

Key design decisions:

  • Countdown timer shows urgency only when it matters (within same-day cutoff)
  • Drop-ship messaging clearly explains vendor fulfillment to avoid confusion
  • Timezone-aware cutoff times based on warehouse and customer location
  • Consistent placement and styling across all product pages

Technical Approach

Leveraged existing inventory API and added configurable cutoff settings. System checks warehouse availability, safety stock, e-holds, and vendor fulfillment status in real-time. Messaging updates based on current time, day of week, and holidays.

Outcome

Live on product detail pages and cart with real-time accuracy. Customers now see trustworthy fulfillment expectations at the moment of purchase, reducing hesitation on time-sensitive orders.
